Step 2 — Segmenting to the Right Cohorts
A national corpus is too broad to act on. NIR competes in two arenas — its Illinois neighbors and the national NAATP membership — so we cut the cohort down to exactly those.
The funnel
How a domain becomes “IL-connected”
None of the directories share a universal key, so we joined each harvested domain back to its source records and read the state field — CARF's state, the Joint Commission's location, SAMHSA's facility state, and NAATP's schema_state. Any domain touching Illinois counts.
That yields 217 IL-connected domains, which split into 188 IL-local providers and 29 multi-state national operators that happen to run Illinois facilities.
- The same hygiene rules used for the national join were applied to Illinois: domains that store service pages as post type, or that are institutional news feeds rather than provider blogs, are excluded so they don't skew the blog counts.
The IL-local cohort
188 Illinois provider domains. These define the local competitive set.
The national operators
29 multi-state chains with an Illinois footprint — treated separately so a national content machine doesn't masquerade as a local peer.
